Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Limited appoints Dr Jim Mather as Board Chair

The directors of Ngāti Awa Group Holdings Limited (NAGHL) have today appointed Dr Jim Mather as their new Chair. Jim has been a Board Director with NAGHL since 2018 but will take over as Chair with immediate effect.

Jim who is of Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe and English descent is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors. Previously CEO of Whakaata Māori (formerly Māori Television), and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, he also has 20 years of governance experience on various boards.

Jim holds an MBA from the Henley Business School in the UK and completed a doctorate in Māori economic development.

Jim will replace Paul Quinn who has been Board Chair since 2014. Paul has led NAGHL through the growth and diversification of its commercial portfolio. His leadership through difficult times provided strength and stability for Ngāti Awa. Paul will continue his work as a Board Director at NAGHL and work alongside Jim as he transitions into the role.

Jim is passionate about using his business and commercial experience to help NAGHL deliver sustainable intergenerational benefits for his iwi. Commenting on the appointment Jim said:

“I am humbled to be appointed Chair of NAGHL and I will have a specific focus on strengthening relationships and ensuring we provide the best possible financial returns for our Iwi in alignment with our tikanga and values”.

“It is important that I also acknowledge the leadership of Paul Quinn and his many achievements during his tenure as Chair. I particularly respect the manner in which he guided NAGHL through the Whakaari tragedy and its aftermath”.
